RETIRED PRODUCT – NO LONGER AVAILABLE! Please consider Model 2400 Series Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge to provide robust and flexible environmental measurements.
The All Season Precipitation Gauges – Model 2310-00 utilize an anti- freeze mix in a 12 in (30.5 cm) diameter cylinder with an overflow tube. The All Season Precipitation Gauge is intended to mount on top of an existing Model 2400-15 top section utilizing an extension tube to direct the overflow stream into the tipping bucket. When precipitation enters the All Season Precipitation Gauge, it mixes with the antifreeze solution and displaces a volume equivalent to the amount of precipitation. This fluid drains through the All Season Precipitation Gauge’s overflow tube to the tipping bucket which measures the precipitation.
A thin layer of mineral oil is floated on the mixture’s surface to prevent evaporation. The All Season Precipitation Gauge’s tubing comes up through the antifreeze solution and ends below the surface with an upside down U going back into the solution. At the highest point of the All Season Precipitation Gauge’s upside down U, a small air vent, also in the shape of an upside down U, lets in air so no vacuum is created.
The antifreeze solution with the top layer of mineral oil is brought to the level where it starts to drain down the All Season Precipitation Gauge’s tube to a tipping bucket. The All Season Precipitation Gauge – Model 2310-00 is then set and ready to measure precipitation.
The height of the All Season Precipitation Gauge should be chosen based on the expected annual water content of the snow.
For Summer operation the All Season Precipitation Gauge may be removed and replaced with a simple Model 2400-06 funnel.
